Archiving (ER)

An electronic records archive might be described as a system created to preserve and provide access to electronic records. It should be noted that, in the traditional sense, archives refers to documents “created or received and…preserved because of their continuing value.” Within this context, we often think of archived documents as being of a permanent nature due to their inherent or historical value. (Source: A Glossary for Archivists, Manuscript Curators, and Records Managers. Lewis and Lynn Lady Bellardo. Society of American Archivists, Chicago: 1992).

Archiving in the information technology world, however, refers to the storage of backup electronic files. Archiving might be used to retain backed-up records for a given period of time (rarely permanently); archiving may be employed to make more hard disk space available; archiving may simply refer to a functionality that purges transaction and data from a database – and restoring that data to a production system may or may not be recommended. It is quite possible that the term archiving has different meanings even among various product resources and users of technology.

This subject area may include documents on design, engineering, technology trends, record integrity, record authenticity, data restoration, image storage, etc.
