Facilities and Buildings

This subject area pertains to the establishment, maintenance, and operation of records centers and/or the use of commercial records storage facilities. Documents may include material on structural, environmental, property, and life-safety standards; location and use of auxiliary spaces; fire barriers and suppression systems; environmental controls; roof elements; weight loads; protection from natural elements (floods, earthquakes, etc.); road access and parking; mechanical equipment; lighting; dock location; hazardous material storage and work areas; etc.

NARA: Facility Standards for Records Storage Facilities On October 1, 2009, new regulations for storage facilities which contain Federal records will take effect. Codified in 36 CFR 1228 Subpart K, the "2009 Regulations" outline requirements for all Federal records storage facilities, including NARA-operated Federal Records Centers, agency-operated storage facilities, and commercial facilities.
